The second season of the highly acclaimed Game of Thrones is due to start filming in a few days. The series, based on George RR Martin’s New York Time best selling series of books, under the title A Song of Ice and Fire, was a monster hit for its first ten episode run on cable outlet HBO.
With events in the first season covering much of book one of the series – A Game of Thrones – season two will move onto book two – A Clash of Kings – and with the new season comes a host of new characters to be cast. Over the last few weeks several of the new main characters have been named.
First cast was Gwendoline Christie (she’s on the left) as Brienne of Tarth. Brienne is the only daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth, she is tall and strong and has spent most of her life in the quest to become a Knight. Because of her plain looks and manly pursuits, she is mockingly dubbed Brienne the Beauty. She is fiercely loyal to Reny Baratheon and becomes one of his Rainbow Guard.
Stephen Dillane was only cast yesterday as Lord Stannis Baratheon. Stannis is the middle of the three Baratheon brothers, and on the death of Robert, and accusations surrounding Joffry’s parentage, proclaims himself the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Stannis is a serious man, not well loved by common folk, he follows a strict code and does not bend to suit anyone’s purpose. The younger Baratheon, Renly, also claims a right to the throne and they become the first two of the five Kings that go to war.
Clarice van Houten has been cast as Melisandre of Asshai, she is a Red Priestess of the god R’hllor, she becomes chief advisor to King Stannis and begins to turn him and his followers from worship of the Seven to R’hllor. She proclaims that Stannis is the savior long promised reborn, and he will lead the forces of light against the forces of darkness massing far beyond the Wall.
Oliver Ford Davies has been cast as Maester Cressen. Cressen has been advisor to Stannis since he was made Lord of Dragonstone, he was advisor to the Baratheon brother’s father before that. This is a small part, if the series follows the book, as Cressen only appears in the prologue.
Liam Cunningham has been cast as Davos Seaworth. Davos was a pirate and smuggler, during Robert’s Rebellion he supplied Stannis, under siege in Storms End, with food enabling him to survive until Ned Stark’s forces lifted the siege. For his aid Stannis raised Davos to a Lord but cut off the tops of his fingers on one hand as punishment for being a smuggler. Davos is loyal to Stannis but has little love for Melisandre.
